) Abstract: More and more evidences accumulated suggest that MITEs may have played important roles in plant gene and genome evolution since the first MITE was identified 20 years ago
The number of MITEs is significant correlation with genome size
MITEs may up-regulate the expression of nearby genes, or they may down-regulate genes through small RNAs, which may be produced double stranded RNAs formed by transcribed MITE sequences
Some MITEs can be active such as tissue culture or γ-radiation
This study focused on identification of MITEs, features of superfamies, distribution of MITEs in genomes, affection of MITEs on gene expression and active MITEs and so on, and the mechanisms of MITE activation will be discussed
