） Abstract： Based on several past study results, the major applications of GIS in the environmental assessment were analyzed, which include some examples from the data collection to the edition process, from the spatial analysis of the assessment to the output approaches of the assessment results etc
Then the characteristics、 advantages 、some present problems about the applications of GIS in the environmental assessment were also included in this article and the development tendency of this research on GIS and environmental assessment was briefly discussed
From the work mentioned above, we can see that GIS technology together with some specific assessment methods applied to the environmental assessment, can greatly improve the quality and efficiency of environmental assessment work
At the same time, with the continuous study progresses of GIS technology, environmental assessment will be better promoted
